During the early years of bitcoin, the coins had little value and the community needed to get them out into circulation somehow. There were sites called faucets that distributed mainnet and testnet bitcoin at regular intervals. One in particular was giving out 4 BTC every 5 minutes! Gulp.
There are still faucets that pay out in satoshis, of course, in return for watching ads or various other activities.
